I was doing an image search for a diabetes handout at work the other day when I came across this beauty.

The photographer has quite cleverly knitted a pancreas-shaped pouch to carry all of her diabetes paraphernalia around in. Clever because:

1. Anyone who can knit is clever in my book
2. The bits and pieces all together perform the function that the pancreas should be doing in the first place.
3. It also shows a particularly good sense of humour. Like one commenter said: “You just have to use humour in life sometimes, don’t you??”

Edit 2009-05-27: I thought I should try to give credit for the above. I found it posted in a recent discussion at dragonsfoot. Now I don’t know who to blame for the “inspirational poster”, but I think that the artist responsible for the Orc Chick herself is Ursula Vernon. I couldn’t find this specific image anywhere, but Ursula has painted the same “model” on Elfwood (warning: NSFW) and I reckon they match. As per the FAQ giving permission to post images to the net, I hereby give credit to the appropriate recipient!

I read this on the [ABC news site][1] today:

Now I know this is a very serious issue (especially for those belonging to minorities in Russia) but I couldn’t hold back a snigger when I remembered hate crimes in [Life on Mars][2]:

I’ve have yet to win NaNoWriMo, but I am really determined this year. When I win (note that I said when, not if), I want to have a winning story like Ensis here. Talk about determination! Break and enter and everything! I don’t want my computer to break first though!

This photo came to me on [my pharmacy mailing list][1] the other day. Apparently it is a real mural on the ceiling of a smoker’s lounge in some new hotel.

That would surely make more of an impact than any of the latest anti-smoking ads on TV!

Being on holidays (paternity leave?) at the moment, I have taken the opportunity to not bother shaving. In fact, I have more facial hair than I have ever had…

I do take exception to my father’s unkind suggestion that it is just bum-fluff, but it really would be an exaggeration to call it a “beard”.

A funny thing though… A couple of my sons’ friends at school, Star Wars nerds all, have suggested that I look like [Qui-Gon Jinn][1]. You be the judge…

I can see what they are thinking, but it is a bit of a stretch. I’ve got a lot less there, and a lot more of it is grey! In fact the best thing about not being clean-shaven is that I am a lot less likely to get “you’re too young to have seven children!”

So I think I will keep my light sabre in the cupboard and remember that I would much rather be [Dr Who][2] anyway!

Check out the [latest Userfriendly comic strip][1]. This makes me laugh when atheists (and others) have a go at us God-botherers for believing in the miraculous. We can’t see any intelligence in human DNA, but we can see it in [radio waves from outer space][2]?

Reminds me of the Red Dwarf episode, Waiting for God.

LISTER: What do you believe in, then? Do you believe in God?
RIMMER: God? Certainly not! What a preposterous thought! I believe in aliens, Lister.
LISTER: Oh, right, fine. Something sensible at last.

*Edit: Just had a second look at the comic, and I think I might be assigning unfair motives to Iliad. Perhaps the strip is really just a Murphy’s Law kind of thing. We stop looking for intelligent life in the sky the day before they decide to show up. Perhaps not.*
